HAPPINESS

Tall pines, silhouetted against the azure sky,

Great puffs of goldenrods that

Enchant my favorite hills;

Happy voices of negroes singing spirituals

After the sultry sun is still.

Oaks and maples, waved to a golden shore

Of hills by the brook, that always stay

Ever ready, to lend their cooling shade

To weary travelers, plodding down life’s way.

Veils of mist that dim the sight for miles;

Lovers, unmindful, as the wings

and clouds float by.

Old men, young men, alike do feel

The nearness of the earth and sky.

The Milky Way, a restful path for weary angels;

The beams of golden moonlight

Glowing down ---

Stillness, aye, solitude, but for the sighing

Of the cool breezes all around.

These are the things that make me happy.

Things He gave,

 that make me carefree,

And over hills and dales and land and sea

Their magic charms are ever calling me!

God offers us much happiness;

He saw fit

To make and put on earth so much of it!
