CAROLINA SUMMER

A bird

Sings at dawn:

A startled

Happy ecstasy ---

Then, in a flash,

‘Tis gone from me.

An aura

Of wistfulness

Sparkles slowly

From the skies.

Nocturnal longing

For sweet peace

Gleams from some

Sad eyes.

Enchanted gardens,

Redolent with flowers,

Sends its fragrance

To far-away bowers.

Afar is heard

A red-bird’s call ---

Molten sunshine

Over all!

The woody glades,

The mossy bowers,

Sweet perfume

From sun-kissed flowers

The dart of music

From birds, make chime,

Until my heart

Throbs in time!

At night

A lone star

Winks at me,

And laughing softly

Seems to tell

My destiny!
