AN ODE TO THE BEGINNER

Memory, push aside thy veil,

Spread the past before us,

And we’ll sing of childhood days

With a thrilling chorus.

In God’s flower bed of time

As fair young plants we begin to grow.

A flower or a weed? Which one?

We wonder, but only God does know!

Shall you falter by the roadside?

Shall you fall into the mire?

Shall you let the devils win you,

Torment you in  hell’s hot fire?

No! Be brave and raise your anchor!

Set sail on an ocean blue!

Steer your ship with courage,

And the best will come back to you.

Laugh when the storms upset Your sails,

Smile when you gain a friend!

Weep not for a day that has swiftly passed.

With the rising sun your soul’s born again!

And when that Reaper grim approaches,

With fearless hand haul in from the wide, blue deep,

Wrap your shroud of goodness about you

And lie you down for a strange,

Sweet sleep!
